Report Finds Circus Activities Boost Wellbeing for Older Adults in North-West
A new report has found that social circus activities deliver measurable benefits for adults aged 55 and over in the North-West of Northern Ireland.
The research, carried out by In Your Space Circus, examined the effects of weekly workshops involving scarf juggling, plate spinning, tightwire and movement exercises.
Participants reported gains in emotional wellbeing, physical mobility, concentration and social connection.
The study, titled Clowning, Connection and Confidence at 55 Plus, was launched on 14 May at The Glassworks in Derry.
Researchers identified an inclusive teaching approach based on trust and humour as central to the programme’s success.
The project was funded by the Ideas Fund and supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
One in six people in Northern Ireland are aged 65 or over, and the report highlights how creative participation can support healthy ageing.
