Construction Begins on £14.5m Newry Innovation Centre
Southern Regional College held a sod cutting ceremony in Newry to mark the start of construction on the £14.5 million Newry Innovation Centre. Officials from the Department for the Economy, Felix O’Hare and Co. Limited, and McAdam Design attended the event.
The two-storey building covers 2,223 square metres. It sits on the former car park of Newry East Campus on Patrick Street. That site once housed Newry Sports Centre.
Felix O’Hare and Co. Limited serves as the main contractor. The firm plans to hire local workers during construction. This includes apprenticeships and higher level apprenticeships.
The Department for the Economy provides full funding. McAdam Design created the plans. The centre will feature project-based learning spaces, collaborative work areas, and breakout zones. Sustainability and energy efficiency guide the design.
The facility aims to open in September 2027. It will support teaching and learning in the community.
Lee Campbell, Principal and Chief Executive of Southern Regional College, welcomed the project milestone. She said the college invests in facilities that meet regional needs.
Ian Snowden, Permanent Secretary at the Department for the Economy, noted the funding supports economic goals. He expects the centre to create jobs and apprenticeships.
Mark Campbell, Managing Director of Felix O’Hare and Co. Limited, called it a privilege to lead the work. He confirmed local recruitment, including for young people to gain skills without relocating.
