Construction has started on a new Theatre and Conference Centre in Newry.

A sod-cutting ceremony took place on 29 May at the site next to Newry Town Hall. Elected members and representatives from the local arts community and the Department for Communities attended.

The project will combine the Grade II-listed Newry Town Hall with a new multi-functional venue on the site of the former Sean Hollywood Arts Centre. The buildings will be linked by a glazed atrium.

The new auditorium will seat 255 people in multiple configurations and up to 315 in conference layout. It will be supported by modern audio-visual systems. The existing 460-seat theatre in Newry Town Hall will remain in use.

The £21.3 million project forms part of a wider £64.4 million Newry City Centre Regeneration programme. Other elements include a 15-acre city park, new public realm works, an office accommodation fund and a civic hub.

The scheme is supported by the Belfast Region City Deal and the Shared Island Initiative. It is expected to open to the public in spring 2028.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said the project includes advance works for Phase 2 of the Newry Flood Alleviation Scheme. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons welcomed the start of construction and the investment in the city.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Philip Campbell said the venue will support the creative sector and attract business. Woodvale Construction Company has been appointed as main contractor and will offer apprentice and trainee places during the build.
