Newry retail and leisure projects advance
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council planning committee approved a development application for a drive-thru restaurant, retail units and office space at Sugar Island on 27 May.
The project is intended to complement the council's planned 250-seat theatre at the former Sean Hollywood Arts Centre site.
Downey Developments will also restore a carriage arch and create a public square with pedestrian access to the area.
The council separately agreed to fund upgrades at leisure and community facilities in Warrenpoint, Cullyhanna and Kilkeel.
Work will include replacement of the changing pavilion at Milltown community sports facility in Warrenpoint, a new roof and internal repairs at Cullyhanna Community Centre, and new fitness equipment for Kilkeel Leisure Centre.
The investment decisions were endorsed by the Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee on 14 May and are due for full council consideration next month.
