Ex-Coleraine Grammar School Pupil Serves as Black Rod in King's Speech Ceremony
Ed Davis, a former pupil and rugby captain at Coleraine Academical Institution - now Coleraine Grammar School - in County Londonderry, acted as Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod during the State Opening of Parliament.
Davis took up the role in July 2023 after 35 years as a Royal Marines officer. The position involves ceremonial and administrative tasks in the House of Lords, including maintaining order and controlling access.
During the King's Speech, Black Rod summons MPs from the House of Commons to the Lords. Tradition requires Commons staff to close the doors as Black Rod approaches, symbolising the chamber's independence.
Black Rod then knocks three times with an ebony rod and enters upon invitation. MPs proceed to the Lords to hear the speech.
Davis noted the practice dates to 1642 and the English Civil War, when King Charles I tried to arrest MPs. The door slamming affirms that the monarch's representative needs permission to enter the Commons.
Earlier this year, Davis addressed pupils from Coleraine Grammar School during their visit to Parliament.
