Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s planning committee has approved a proposal to install a high-performance 3G hybrid pitch at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

The decision, taken on Thursday, will replace the existing natural grass playing surface in the main arena. Planning officer Sean O’Kane recommended granting permission, and no objections were received from statutory consultees.

The project includes removal of the grass and soil, installation of the hybrid surface with engineered sub-base and performance layers, new drainage networks, an automated irrigation system, and stormwater management infrastructure with a cellular attenuation tank.

A drainage assessment was required because part of the site falls marginally within a surface water climate change constraint area. Planners concluded the drainage proposals would adequately manage flood risk and environmental impacts.

The venue lies about 1.4 kilometres north-east of Ballymena town centre, accessed via St Patrick’s Link and Warden Street, and the site extends to just under one hectare.

Alderman Stewart McDonald, speaking after the committee meeting, said the upgrade represents a significant investment in one of the borough’s premier sporting facilities. He noted that modern all-weather surfaces allow much more intensive use throughout the year, reducing cancellations caused by poor weather and improving access for clubs, schools and community groups.

McDonald also commended fellow TUV councillor Matthew Armstrong for his work in driving the proposal forward from its early stages.

Once complete, the enhanced pitch is expected to support higher levels of participation across all age groups and help the Showgrounds meet growing demand for training and matches in all seasons.
