Cllr Ruairi McHugh, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, joined partners to launch the 2026 Active Travel Challenge. The free online initiative runs throughout June. Individuals, organisations and businesses in the North West can register now.

Participants log walks, cycles, runs or public transport journeys for everyday trips. The challenge aims to support healthier and greener travel options across Derry-Londonderry and the wider region.

The 2025 challenge recorded over 1,600 participants across Northern Ireland. They logged more than 27,000 journeys, saved over 18,000kg of CO2 and over £22,000 in travel costs.

Cllr McHugh encouraged residents to leave cars at home in June. He noted the area's greenway network and frequent Translink services as alternatives to driving.

Alan Young, Translink Service Delivery Manager, highlighted last year's participation as the highest since 2019. He said switching to public transport reduces emissions and supports healthier communities.

Maurice Meehan, Public Health Agency Head of Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement, stated the challenge helps build movement into daily routines for physical and mental wellbeing.

Claire Pollock, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Northern Ireland Head, described the event as a starting point for lasting changes in travel habits.

Partners include Translink, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, Public Health Agency, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Belfast City Council, Derry City and Strabane District Council and Western Health and Social Care Trust. The Department for Infrastructure provides support.

Registration is free at atc.getmeactive.org.uk. Participants can join as individuals or teams for chances to win vouchers, travel passes and other rewards.
