Martin Istenik, 44, of New Brighton Terrace in Omagh, appeared via videolink at Omagh Magistrates Court on Tuesday. He faces a charge of causing serious injury to his twin brother in a stabbing at their home.

Police and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service responded to the Omagh address after a report of a stabbing. Officers found ambulance staff treating two men in the kitchen. The injured man had stab wounds to his lower back and a bandage around his torso. A knife was recovered at the scene along with blood on the floor.

The injured man reported to police that he and his twin brother had been drinking and argued verbally. He received hospital treatment for a nine-centimetre stab wound to his lower back. He remains in stable condition and has communicated with police, though no formal complaint statement has been submitted.

Defence solicitor Michael Fahy informed the court of difficulties obtaining instructions from Istenik due to interpreter arrangements. Fahy noted issues during overnight charging when the interpreter appeared via videolink in open court. He stated that full consultation with the defendant had not occurred.

A prosecutor confirmed no statement had been obtained from the injured party. The case adjourned until May 12. The court ordered an interpreter to attend in person at the next hearing.
