Newry Mourne and Down Council Advances Play Parks and Sports Facilities
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has completed upgrades to play parks at several locations. Recent work improved facilities at Bishop’s Court in Ballyhornan, Derrybeg in Newry, Ardross and Rathview in Crossmaglen. Earlier projects covered Conway Park in Mullaghbawn, Village Green in Belleeks, Granite View in Saval, Scrogg Road in Kilkeel and Seaview in Ardglass.
The upgrades provide accessible play spaces with equipment for physical activity, creativity and social interaction. Councillor Philip Campbell, council chairperson, stated the council aims to enhance facilities supporting health and wellbeing. He noted close work with communities to meet local needs for lasting benefits.
The council plans to upgrade 16 play parks overall under its Play Strategy 2024-2029. Further investment will target additional sites over the next two years.
Separately, the council lodged a proposal notice for a multi-sports hub at St Mark’s High School in Warrenpoint. The project includes a 3G playing surface, sports pavilion with gymnasium and changing rooms, floodlighting, fencing, path, ballstops and site works.
In October, the council approved a partnership with the school and allocated £500,000 from its sports budget. A facilities review identified shortages of all-weather pitches and ancillary spaces in the Crotlieve area, especially for Gaelic games, rugby and football training.
Public consultation events for the hub occurred at Warrenpoint Town Hall on Wednesday between 2pm-4pm and 6pm-7pm.
