Flash Flooding Closes Foyle Road in Derry City Centre
Flash flooding struck parts of Derry city centre after torrential rainfall. Foyle Road and the lower deck of Craigavon Bridge saw the worst impacts. Sandbags protected shop fronts and businesses as drains failed to handle the water.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue crews pumped water from the affected stretch of Foyle Road, which runs parallel to the river walkway. Authorities closed sections of the road temporarily. Vehicles, including a bus, attempted to pass through the floodwaters earlier.
The rainfall ended a two-week period of warm, dry spring weather in the north west. Foyle Road flooded previously in December, creating hazards for motorists, pedestrians, businesses, and residents.
Concerns persist over repeated flooding in low-lying areas around Derry city centre. Calls continue for drainage improvements due to more frequent storms in the region.
The Met Office forecast mainly dry conditions for Tuesday and Wednesday. Showers may arrive from the west later in the week, with longer spells of rain possible on Thursday and Friday. Highs will reach 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, with nights dropping to 2 to 5 degrees Celsius.
Longer-term outlook to mid-May points to unsettled weather with high uncertainty.
