Foyle Bridge inspection to bring summer traffic disruption
A principal inspection of the Foyle Bridge in Derry is scheduled to begin on July 14, 2026. The routine examination of all accessible parts of the structure will continue into September to ensure its ongoing safety and durability.
Temporary traffic management will be in place throughout the works for the safety of the inspection team and road users. Drivers can expect lane and footway closures at various times. An enforceable 30mph speed limit will operate on the bridge, and the segregated left turn lane at Culmore Roundabout may be shut to avoid merging three lanes into one.
The bridge will operate without temporary traffic controls on a number of dates to accommodate local events. No restrictions will be in place from July 20 to 25 for the Foyle Cup, on August 8 for the 2026 Relief of Derry celebrations, on September 5 for the European Triathlon, and on September 6 for the Waterside Half Marathon.
The Department for Infrastructure has asked the travelling public to allow extra journey time and to be patient while the essential inspection is completed. It apologised for any disruption and said it would monitor traffic effects throughout the summer, aiming to keep delays to a minimum. Updates will be available at www.trafficwatchni.com.
