Banbridge Woman Receives Suspended Sentences for Cocaine and Cannabis Possession
Elizabeth McClure, from Ballygowan Park in Banbridge, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court on charges of possessing cocaine, a Class A drug, and cannabis, a Class B drug.
Police searched her property during an investigation and discovered herbal cannabis under the mattress in the main bedroom. A search of McClure found 12 bags of white powder, believed to be cocaine, and empty deal bags inside a slipper she wore. The white powder totalled 10g.
McClure told police the white substance was cocaine, bought from a friend for personal use. She hid it in her slipper fearing police discovery and prison.
Her defence stated she had no relevant criminal record, suffered low mood, bought cocaine in bulk on a friend's advice for mental health as it was cheaper, and felt upset about a possible conviction.
District Judge Rosie Watters noted McClure avoided a charge of possession with intent to supply. For cocaine possession, Watters imposed a five-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. For cannabis possession, a two-month sentence was suspended for two years. Watters ordered destruction of the drugs.
