Strabane History Society Lecture Examines Trade Unionist Ann Browne's Career
Strabane History Society holds its final lecture of the 2025/26 programme tonight at Strabane Brass Band Clubrooms on John Wesley Street. The event starts at 7:30pm and covers the life of Ann Browne, a trade unionist from Melmount Villas who attended Mount Carmel Grammar School.
Browne studied Spanish at Queen's University in Belfast. She took further studies at London's Institute of Latin American Studies and earned an MA in 1974. She joined the Joint Working Group for Refugees in Latin America.
In 1977, Browne travelled to Chile and Bolivia with a delegation from the National Union of Mineworkers. She later served as Education and Organisation Projects Secretary at the Miners' International Federation, with offices in London and Brussels. She supported the Sintracarbon coalworkers' syndicate in Colombia in their efforts for improved working conditions.
The society's next event is a site visit to St Lugadius' Church and Lifford Museum in the Courthouse on May 28th.
