Causeway Coast and Glens Council Approves Plinth for UDR Corporal Killed in 1974 Garvagh Bombing
Causeway Coast and Glens Council has approved a memorial plinth in Garvagh for Corporal Conley of the Ulster Defence Regiment. The corporal died in a car bomb attack on Bridge Street in the village on July 23, 1974.
Council members approved a motion in 2023 to install a permanent memorial near the Garvagh War Memorial for those who served and died, plus a plaque at the bombing site on Bridge Street.
Public consultation participants supported both the plaque honouring service members and the separate plinth for Corporal Conley.
The Leisure and Development Committee received this feedback during its meeting last October.
In April, the Planning Committee unanimously approved attaching the plaque to the historic stone wall and placing the plinth adjacent to steps at the Main Street war memorial.
A planning officer stated the plaque uses dark grey granite to match the basalt wall and war memorial, with similar font. The plinth will use granite or equivalent material with a matte brushed sandblasted finish.
The officer noted no objections from the public or Historic Environment Division's Monuments and Buildings teams. The proposal causes no demonstrable harm to the listed building's setting.
Council members voted unanimously for the application.
