Designs Revealed for Belfast Blitz Memorial Ahead of 85th Anniversary
Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum unveiled designs for a memorial to the 952 known fatalities of the Belfast Blitz. The monument will stand in Cathedral Gardens, between St Anne's Cathedral and Ulster University Belfast campus. Unveiling is planned for spring 2027 alongside the gardens' completion.
Cathedral Gardens undergo a £5 million redevelopment into a public area with an events space, play areas, and digital zones. The memorial features artwork by Ralf Sander and Naomi Sander. It includes a reflective surface linked to a historical image of the bombed Belfast International Bar on the site and a bronze relief based on 1941 photographs.
Historians Alan Freeburn and Dr. Brian Barton aided the museum in identifying the victims' names for inscription. The Blitz comprised four raids in 1941: Dockside Raid on 7-8 April, Easter Tuesday Raid on 15-16 April, Fire Raid on 4-5 May, and Final Raid on 5-6 May.
Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly stated the memorial suits the area hit hard by World War Two air raids. Don Bigger, chairman of the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum, called it a monument to the raids' impact. Ralf Sander noted the design captures multiple stories of local resilience during the bombings.
UUP councillor Jeffrey Dudgeon proposed the memorial at Belfast City Council in 2018. He pointed out that 90 of the nearly 1000 killed were service personnel.
