Nephew Urges Diocese to Repair Grave of 1976 Murder Victim in Belfast Cemetery
Pat Neeson has asked the Diocese of Down and Connor to restore his uncle Con Neeson's grave in Milltown Cemetery, Belfast. The grave sustained damage in December when work occurred on a nearby plot.
Con Neeson, aged 48, died on August 2, 1976, after an attack by the Shankill Butcher gang the previous evening. The assault took place at the corner of Manor Street in North Belfast as he walked home from calling bingo numbers at St Patrick’s Parish Hall.
Pat Neeson has maintained the grave for years. He found the plaque covered in dirt and improperly placed after a digger rested on the site during the adjacent grave work.
The family plans a commemoration in August to mark 50 years since Con Neeson's death. Pat Neeson wants the grave prepared for the event.
Pat Neeson stated that the condition shows a lack of respect for the deceased. He contrasted maintenance at Milltown Cemetery with the City Cemetery, where paths allow access without stepping on graves.
His grandmother's grave in Milltown also requires stepping over others to reach due to absent pathways. Pat Neeson urged the Diocese and its contractors to improve care at the site.
