Enniskillen Mother Joins Westminster Vigil on Lobular Breast Cancer Research
Martina Flanagan, 46, from Enniskillen took part in a silent vigil in Westminster on Wednesday. She joined 21 other women from across the UK. Each represented one of the 22 women diagnosed daily with lobular breast cancer.
Flanagan has stage 4 metastatic lobular breast cancer. Doctors diagnosed her last year. The disease spread to her lymph nodes and bones. She has three children aged 8, 10 and 13. The illness caused constant pain and forced her to leave her job as a teacher.
Her 13-year-old daughter Sarah accompanied her to Westminster. Sarah delivered a letter to Downing Street that day. The letter calls for urgent research into the disease.
Around 8,000 women receive a lobular breast cancer diagnosis in the UK each year. The condition accounts for one in seven breast cancer cases.
The vigil forms part of the Lobular Moon Shot Project. Campaigner Tristan Loraine leads the project. His wife Susan died from lobular breast cancer last year.
The project seeks 20 million pounds over five years from ministers including Wes Streeting. Funds would support research into the disease.
