Fermanagh Wind Turbine Application Draws Defence Concern Over Low-Flying Aircraft
An application to erect a wind turbine has been submitted in Newtownbutler, Fermanagh. The proposed site lies on The Kids Road on private land with no public access.
The turbine features a 40m tower and 53m rotor. CD Consultation submitted the application on behalf of Canice and Martin McGovern.
St Angelo Airport, Belfast International Airport, National Air Traffic Services and Joint Radio Company raised no objections. Authorities requested a steady red obstacle light at the top of the turbine, lit 24 hours a day, for low-flying aircraft awareness.
The Ministry of Defence expressed concern about potential impact on low-flying aircraft. The site sits in a Low Flying Area where fixed-wing aircraft train as low as 250 feet.
