NI Water recalls 2008 sewer rescue of Winnie-the-Pooh toy in Ballymoney
A Winnie-the-Pooh soft toy was removed from a sewer pipe in Ballymoney in 2008 by NI Water workers called to a reported blockage. The removal took two hours.
NI Water has reminded the public that wastewater pipes serving homes can be as narrow as 10 cm and are designed to carry only pee, poo and toilet paper.
Pat McCauley, NI Water education officer, said that while the toy was removed, items flushed or put down drains can cause significant problems. He said blocked sewers can lead to wastewater flooding in homes and streets, create a risk of pollution, and require considerable time and resources to clear.
McCauley said the message is to flush only the three Ps: pee, poo and toilet paper. Wipes, sanitary products and all other household waste should be placed in the bin. Soft toys should stay above ground.
Advice on preventing blockages is available on the NI Water website.
