Construction has begun on the final phase of a £2 million Environmental Improvement Scheme in Markethill, County Armagh. The work, which started on 2 October 2026, is part of the Covid Recovery Small Settlements Regeneration Programme and follows upgrades already completed in Rathfriland and Gilford.

The scheme is funded by the Department for Communities, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, the Department for Infrastructure, and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Since March 2026, improvements in Rathfriland and Gilford have enhanced the appearance and functionality of both towns.

In Markethill, the work will begin at the Dolphin Takeaway and progress up Main Street. Planned upgrades include new paving, kerb repairs, and the installation of street furniture to improve the town centre environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said the programme demonstrates effective collaboration between departments and councils to address long-standing issues in smaller settlements. He noted that works in Rathfriland and Gilford are nearing completion and that the investment supports the long-term sustainability of rural towns.

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir highlighted the benefits of partnership working to support rural communities, saying the improvements will enhance the village for those who live, work, and spend time there.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said her department contributed to the scheme through the Small Settlements Regeneration Programme, which has been delivering public realm enhancements for pedestrians in villages across Northern Ireland for the past five years. She said the work helps meet climate change ambitions, grow the economy, and improve wellbeing.

Deputy Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Alderman Lavelle McIlwrath, said the investment has already delivered significant enhancements in Rathfriland and Gilford, and the Markethill works will further improve the town centre. He thanked residents and businesses for their patience during construction.
