Gas supplies have been restored to customers in Omagh after a damaged pipeline on Gortin Road was repaired.

Energy company Evolve said its engineers completed repairs to the gas main, which was damaged by a third-party contractor on Wednesday.

The incident led to an emergency response, with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service setting up a 100-metre exclusion zone. Nearby homes and businesses, including a creche, were evacuated as a precaution.

Evolve's technical assessment identified a 15-metre safety exclusion zone around the damaged main, within which no properties were located. The fire service later introduced the wider zone in line with its procedures.

The road was reopened and the exclusion zone lifted at around 8pm on Wednesday evening. Engineers worked through the day and evening to isolate the damaged section, putting temporary measures in place overnight before carrying out permanent repairs on Thursday. Gas supplies were then restored to the seven affected customers.

Mark Davidson, Evolve's Head of Engineering, said public and staff safety had remained the priority throughout. He said the engineering team quickly made the situation safe and isolated the damage. He thanked the fire service, the PSNI and other authorities for their assistance.
