Tributes Paid to Clannad Singer Moya Brennan After Death at 73
Moya Brennan, lead singer of Clannad, has died at age 73. A family statement said she died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by husband Tim and children Aisling and Paul.
Brennan formed Clannad with family members in Gweedore, Donegal, in 1970. The band gained prominence with theme tunes for the TV series Harry's Game, set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, and Robin of Sherwood.
Clannad received a Bafta award in 1984 and a Grammy in 1999. Brennan pursued a solo career, releasing her first album in 1992 and her final studio album in 2024.
Singer Daniel O'Donnell said Brennan never forgot her roots in Donegal and supported younger local talent. He described her as generous and peaceful.
Ireland's Taoiseach Micheál Martin said Brennan brought Irish folk music to the international stage. Tánaiste Simon Harris called her a musical icon with a unique voice.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said Brennan captured the essence of Irish heritage in her music. Clannad held a farewell concert in Dublin in 2023.
