Ards and North Down Council to Consider Memorial Bench for Jaidyn Rice
Ards and North Down Council plans to install a memorial bench in Bangor to honour 16-year-old Jaidyn Rice. The teenager from the Clandeboye area died at the scene of a car crash on July 8 near her home. She was walking at the time.
The proposal comes before a council meeting this week. Officials will work with the Rice family to create the site as a place of reflection and connection. Ulster Unionist councillor Pete Wray and Alliance members support the motion.
Wray manages Northern Ireland Alternatives, a community group. He knew Rice through its youth provision. He stated the bench recognises her impact on her family, community and youth groups. He said it will aid grieving young people and signpost the council's Here to Help app for support services.
Rice served as an army cadet and participated in youth and community work. She had begun her first job. She stood out at the DICE Project, a youth scheme in Bangor serving several housing estates.
A 30-year-old man from Co Down faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence and without insurance. He remains on bail pending trial.
