Foyle MLA Paul Delargy spoke at a Friends of Sinn Féin Canada event in Toronto on Easter Sunday. The gathering took place in the West Cork Irish Pub.

Delargy stated that Irish unity requires active effort and will not occur by chance. He noted that the Good Friday Agreement sets out referendums in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as the route to reunification.

Sovereignty rests with the people of Ireland, according to Delargy. He added that Irish communities abroad, including those in Canada, form part of the national narrative. Their involvement, voices, and backing play a role.

Delargy called for ongoing support from Irish communities worldwide. This includes applying pressure to governments, businesses, and civic groups to create momentum for change.

He pointed to the long history of Irish emigration to Canada, which began before the Great Famine and reflects Ireland's challenges. Delargy highlighted the ongoing political engagement among Irish groups in Toronto and across Canada.

Newer emigrants from his generation offer chances to strengthen republican efforts in Canada, Delargy said. These efforts focus on pushing for a referendum on Ireland's future and maintaining commitment over time.
