Man Charged After Disorder Before Irish Cup Semi-Final in South Belfast
Police in south Belfast charged a 19-year-old man after disorder on Friday evening, 3 April, before the Irish Cup semi-final at Windsor Park. The man faces charges of riotous behaviour, doing a provocative act, possession of fireworks or flares at a regulated match, indecent behaviour, and attempted criminal damage. He is scheduled to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court on 1 May. The Public Prosecution Service will review the charges as standard procedure.
The incident occurred during an approved public procession by Cliftonville supporters ahead of their match against Dungannon Swifts. About 250 people took part in the procession. Officers observed provocative conduct and heavy use of pyrotechnics and fireworks despite prior warnings. The Parades Commission had set conditions on the procession, applied for by Cliftonville FC Supporters and Red Fanatics. Police noted potential breaches of those conditions and plan to investigate.
Nine police officers sustained injuries, and a child was struck by a bottle. Fireworks, flares, and bottles were thrown during the disorder before the game. Two other individuals received reports for offences including use of flares. South Belfast District Commander Superintendent Finola Dornan stated most fans acted peacefully, but a number engaged in unacceptable behaviour before and after the match.
