19-Year-Old Arrested After Disorder at Irish Cup Semi-Final in Belfast
A 19-year-old man remains in custody after his arrest in connection with public disorder before the Irish Cup semi-final at Windsor Park in Belfast on Friday evening.
Police reported that a child was struck by a bottle during the incident. Nine officers sustained injuries as fireworks, flares, and bottles were thrown.
The trouble occurred ahead of the match between Cliftonville and Dungannon Swifts. Swifts won on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Cliftonville supporters held an approved public procession involving about 250 people prior to the game.
South Belfast District Commander Superintendent Finola Dornan stated that police observed provocative conduct and heavy use of pyrotechnics and fireworks during the procession, despite warnings.
She noted potential breaches of Parades Commission determinations relating to the procession, which police will investigate.
The 19-year-old faces suspicion of riotous behaviour, doing a provocative act, possession of fireworks or flares at a regulated match, indecent behaviour, and attempted criminal damage.
Two other individuals were reported for offences that included use of flares.
Superintendent Dornan said most fans behaved peacefully, but a proportion engaged in unacceptable conduct before and after the match. Police plan a thorough evidence-gathering operation and will work with football clubs to address inappropriate behaviour.
