Community Seminar in Derry Addresses Violence Against Women and Girls
Community members, churches and local organisations gathered in Derry for a seminar on violence against women and girls. The Churches Trust organised the event on Wednesday. It followed a series of workshops.
Seventeen-year-old Daniel Gamble spoke for young participants. He pointed to harmful online content influencing attitudes among young men. Gamble stressed workshops to challenge these ideas and promote respect in relationships. He urged young men to speak up against wrong behaviour and address pressures of outdated masculinity.
Patricia Breslin shared her experiences at the seminar. Attendees received white ribbons to start conversations with male family members or friends. The ribbons symbolise shared responsibility to end violence against women and girls.
Mary Holmes, CEO of Churches Trust, stated that such discussions become easier with practice. Margaret Bonner, Health Equalities Officer, joined Holmes in presenting to Breslin and Gamble.
Participants took part in workshops and group discussions. The event stressed collective action by men, women and young people. It highlighted roles of churches and community groups in changing attitudes.
