Dungannon Man Drowns in Bali, Funeral Held in Tyrone
Jonathan Joel Kennedy, 39, from Dungannon in Tyrone, died after being found unconscious in the water off Nyang Nyang Beach in Bali on March 15. His funeral service occurred at Dungannon Presbyterian Church, led by Rev James O’Neill.
Rev O’Neill read a tribute from Kennedy's sister Diane during the service. The tribute stated Kennedy worked early in his career at Moy Park, then trained as a labourer and plumber. He later moved to Australia, working in Darwin and Perth while traveling the country.
Kennedy played football for Dungannon Juniors and Coagh United. He represented Northern Ireland at boys' level, wearing number five and captaining the team. Rev O’Neill noted Kennedy won the Jack Wood International against Scotland and played in the Milk Cup for Tyrone.
The tribute mentioned Kennedy received a Dungannon District Council sports award, ahead of a local golf professional and snooker player. His sports career ended due to a knee injury. Kennedy supported Liverpool football club.
Kennedy was father to a son named Jericho. He stayed in contact through video calls and online chess while in Australia. After working in Nottingham, he traveled through Vietnam, Thailand, and Bali.
The family thanked the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust for assistance in bringing Kennedy's body home.
