Paddy Elliott of Lenadoon died in hospital on Monday, one day before his 83rd birthday, with his family at his side.

He was the husband of the late Sally Elliott and father to Pearse, Eamonn, Brendan, Kevin, Sean, Sarah and Ciara.

His son Pearse described his father as someone who treated everyone the same, regardless of their background, and who believed in supporting young people by giving them a hurley, a pigeon or a ferret.

Elliott hurled into his fifties and won an All-Ireland silver doubles handball championship with partner Johnnsy Dempsey. The title came after he had undergone a quadruple heart bypass. He was known for a powerful shot in street handball games played against cobbles and gable walls.

A committed Gael, he had a long association with Dwyers GAC. Lámh Dhearg GAC stated that he was a positive presence on the sidelines during the 1980s and 1990s, supporting his sons and the club.

He kept pigeons throughout his life and remained with his birds until his final days.

His remains will leave his late residence at 9.15am on Friday for 10am Requiem Mass at St Oliver Plunkett Church. Burial will follow at Milltown Cemetery.
