A founder of K9 Search and Rescue NI, Ryan Gray, and his search dog Max sustained injuries during an assault by multiple youths in Bangor, County Down, on Friday evening.

Police received a report at 19:50 GMT of a fight involving a man and about 15 to 20 young people in the High Street area. Officers arrived to see several young people, mostly in dark clothing, running from the scene.

The incident followed a verbal exchange as Gray walked up the street with Max. Youths punched Gray in the face several times and kicked the dog multiple times.

Gray received treatment in hospital for facial injuries. Max received veterinary assessment after the attack.

K9 Search and Rescue NI confirmed the assault occurred while Gray and Max were off duty. The charity stated its member attended A&E and the dog saw a vet.

Paul Donley, secretary of K9 Search and Rescue NI, said Gray protected the dog during the incident. North Down MLA Stephen Dunne noted recent attacks, damage, and anti-social behaviour in Bangor city centre.

Dunne stated he contacted PSNI for increased patrols, the council's anti-social behaviour team, and street pastors. Police appealed for information, quoting reference 1493 of 27/03/26, via 101, online form, or Crimestoppers.

PSNI confirmed ongoing enquiries into the assault and multiple anti-social behaviour reports in recent weeks. Officers committed to increased patrols and partnership work in Bangor.
