Council Removes Flags in East Belfast Amid Ongoing Tensions
Belfast City Council removed flags from locations in East Belfast last week. More flags were put up following the action. A paralegal from North Down intervened in the matter. A warning appeared on a wall near the site, threatening anyone who removes flags.
In south Belfast, the site at Monarch Parade has been cleared of asbestos piled there last year. The area remains toxic for at least three more years. An electricity substation serving the city's two main hospitals stands yards from where pallets are stacked again.
The Donegall Road bonfire site stays empty during school hours. Local people guard similar sites around the clock in summer. Authorities including police, council, courts, fire service, politicians and community representatives have been called to remove materials now.
PSNI stated intentions in recent weeks to end territorial claims linked to such activities.
