Second Private Meeting Set for Bangor Marine Gardens Car Park Plans
Bangor Marine Ltd will hold a private workshop with councillors on Monday, April 13, to present revised plans for a car park at Queen's Parade in Bangor. The meeting excludes the public and press. The company, a joint venture between Oakland Holdings and the Karl Group, seeks to build a 90-space paid car park on a green area at Marine Gardens.
The proposal requires planning approval from councillors. Local resident Roy Kerr criticised the lack of public access to the meeting. Councillors first discussed the plans during a private workshop in August last year. Residents learned of the car park idea five months later, in February this year.
The car park forms part of a £14m redevelopment of Marine Gardens, which includes pavilions, an events space, and a £1.3m sculpture series by Colin Davidson. Campaigners launched an online petition at savemarinegardens.co.uk, which has over 2,500 signatures opposing the project. The petition calls for rejection of the plan to convert green space to a commercial car park under a 125-year lease.
Residents organised a protest at Bangor Castle before the latest full council meeting.
