Bangor Marine plans a paid car park with 90 spaces at Queen's Parade in Bangor, part of the £14m Marine Gardens project that includes a £1m play park. The firm confirmed it will proceed despite objections from residents and local councillors.

Residents protested at Bangor Castle on Wednesday night against replacing parkland with the car park. They oppose a 125-year lease granting Bangor Marine rights to collect charges on the community land.

Linda McAuley called the proposal an error, noting a feasibility study found no need for extra parking spaces. She highlighted potential traffic increases on narrow roads like Somerset Avenue.

Loren Wilson, a Queen's Parade resident for nearly 40 years, urged retention of the green space used by locals and visitors. Ian Rodgers stated the plan would damage the historic Victorian terrace vista along the parade.

Bangor Marine stated it is reviewing the number of parking spaces to balance local needs with project requirements. The firm pledged to keep existing trees, add native species suited to the climate, and landscape the car park and play park to fit the coastal setting.

The developer noted the project will expand open green space overall in Marine Gardens, including new garden areas for relaxation. Bangor Marine emphasized ongoing talks with the council, Department for Communities, and stakeholders.
