Northern Ireland Footballer Josh Magennis Targets 100 Caps in World Cup Playoff Push
Northern Ireland's Josh Magennis aims to reach 100 international caps. The 35-year-old striker has 86 appearances for his country. He plays for Exeter City in EFL League One.
Magennis joins the Northern Ireland squad in Bergamo for a World Cup qualifier playoff against Italy. The match takes place at New Balance Arena on Thursday at 7.45pm. A win advances them to face the winner of Wales versus Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Bangor native debuted against Turkey in 2010. He scored his first goal for Northern Ireland in a 3-1 loss to Greece at Windsor Park in 2015. He has 12 international goals and ranks 10th in appearances, tied with Keith Gillespie.
Magennis stated his main drive is achieving 100 caps through strong performances at his club. He added two caps in November's qualifiers against Slovakia and Luxembourg.
He was part of the team that qualified for the 2016 European Championship, Northern Ireland's first major tournament in 30 years. The side reached the round of 16 in France.
Magennis noted that World Cup qualification, last achieved in the 1980s, would unite the country. He described the reception after Euro 2016 as unprecedented.
Now 17 years into his professional career, Magennis trains fully with teammates and remains available for selection while fit.
