A dedicated same-day care unit at the Ulster Hospital is reducing emergency department attendances for oncology and haematology patients across the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

The Same Day Emergency Care Unit, housed within the Macmillan Unit, provides rapid assessment and treatment for patients who become unwell due to their cancer or its treatment. Open weekdays from 8am to 6pm, it is staffed by a team of doctors, nurses and support workers.

Patients are given a helpline number at the start of their treatment. Calls are answered by experienced nurses who offer advice or arrange same-day appointments when necessary. Those with critical illness or medical emergencies are still directed to the emergency department.

Sarah Milliken of Newtownards, who is receiving treatment for leukaemia, described the service as a significant support. She said the team listens carefully to concerns and arranges everything if a patient needs to come in. Knowing there is a direct line to someone who understands the condition provides reassurance for families at home, she added.

Deputy Sister Caroline Johnston said the unit was established to give faster access to specialist care while reducing infection risks for immunocompromised patients. She noted that assessment and treatment within the Macmillan Unit often avoids the need for an emergency department visit where vulnerable people could be exposed to infectious illnesses.

Ms Johnston explained that continuity of care is an important feature, with patients seen by professionals who know their diagnosis, treatment and potential complications. Evidence-based pathways, including for neutropenic sepsis, ensure timely intervention. Depending on their condition, patients may be treated and sent home the same day or admitted to hospital if required.

Feedback from patients has been overwhelmingly positive, Ms Johnston said, and staff are proud of the difference the service is making to patients and their families every day.
