Belfast Boxer Michael Conlan Retires After Split Decision Loss
Michael Conlan lost a ten-round featherweight bout to Kevin Walsh by split decision at the SSE Arena in Belfast on Friday night. Scores were 97-93 for Conlan and 96-94 twice for Walsh.
Conlan, aged 34 from Belfast, entered with three prior wins after a year-long break in 2024. Walsh, 33 and undefeated entering the fight, had four bouts last year.
A head clash early cut Conlan, causing blood flow for the rest of the match. Conlan switched stances often and kept Walsh at distance through most rounds.
Walsh showed more activity against Conlan in orthodox stance. In the final round, Walsh threw shots at the start, but Conlan held position until the bell.
Post-fight, Conlan confirmed his retirement from boxing. He has fought professionally for 27 years.
Conlan won amateur bronze at the 2012 London Olympics. He claimed Commonwealth and European titles, and became Ireland's first male amateur world champion.
His professional career began after the 2016 Rio Olympics.
