Very Rev Fr PJ Gormley SMA died on Thursday, March 12 at Craigavon Area Hospital. The priest from Augher in Tyrone spent many years working with communities in Zambia's Copperbelt region for the Society of African Missions.

Mass took place at the Society of African Missions in Dromantine, Newry, on Saturday, March 14 at 11am. His remains transferred to St Macartan's Church in Augher. Requiem Mass occurred there at 12 noon on Monday, March 16, followed by burial in the church cemetery.

A mass also occurred at Holy Trinity Church in Kitwe, Zambia, a parish Fr Gormley founded. Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP Pat Cullen stated he travelled far for missionary work but kept his Tyrone roots.

Tyrone GAA noted Fr Gormley's success on the field with Augher St Macartan's teams that won Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championship honours. Augher St Macartan's GAC recalled his contribution to their 1976 Senior Championship win.
