Derry Cyber Expert Alerts SMEs to Heightened Risks from Global Cyber Threats
A cyber security expert based in Derry has warned small and medium-sized enterprises in Northern Ireland of increased risks from global cyber threats. The founder of Safe Harbour Security and former CEO of MetaCompliance states that geopolitical tensions are boosting cyber activity worldwide.
He points to a mix of nation-state operations, politically motivated groups, and organised criminals sharing the same threat space, which raises risks for all organisations. The UK National Cyber Security Centre has issued new guidance for organisations to bolster defences due to instability in the Middle East.
SMEs rarely face direct nation-state attacks but suffer spillover effects through automated campaigns, supply chain weaknesses, or indiscriminate efforts. Artificial intelligence lowers barriers for cybercriminals and boosts attack scale and complexity amid global conflicts.
Large firms possess resources for defence, while SMEs lack them and become more vulnerable as threats grow. Smaller businesses often serve as entry points or remain exposed in expanded campaigns.
Many SMEs overlook their weaknesses until after an incident causes harm. Safe Harbour Security will host a webinar on March 24 at 10am for SME leaders to learn risks and protective measures.
