William Garnon from Carnhill in Derry has started a Kickstarter campaign for Abair flashcards to teach foundational Irish words in homes.

Garnon lives in Dubai after years working in New York, the west coast of the United States and India. He has resided there for eight years. His daughter Billie was born in Dubai. The family brings her to Ireland regularly to introduce her to local culture and traditions.

Garnon and his wife Terri restarted the Dubai Irish Society after a five-year break. They work with groups such as Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann to hold music, cultural and social events for Irish families in Dubai.

The flashcard idea began when Garnon wrote Irish words on cards at the kitchen table for his daughter. Each card includes the English meaning and phonetic pronunciation.

Garnon designed Abair to make the language accessible for parents and children to learn together one word at a time.

His family includes a son Odhrán living in Boston. Garnon aims to spread Irish words across homes and generations.

The Kickstarter seeks £5,000 to fund the first production run. Supporters can pre-order the cards through the campaign.
