Frogspawn Collected from Templepatrick Golf Course Ponds
Frogspawn was collected from ponds at Templepatrick Golf Course in County Antrim. The collection took place during March when adult frogs had left the water after laying eggs.
A net on a long pole scooped enough frogspawn to fill two lunch boxes from a pond at the 10th hole. Last year frogs were observed breeding there in February with females laying eggs.
The larger container of frogspawn went to a garden pond protected by plastic netting against birds. Hundreds of tadpoles from prior collections survived to adulthood there.
The smaller container was delivered to Coláiste Feirste where students observe the eggs develop into tadpoles and frogs.
Frogs face predation from creatures including hedgehogs, herons, blackbirds, and badgers after leaving ponds. A single female frog lays 4,000 eggs.
