The Public Health Agency has issued guidance for St Patrick's Day celebrations across Northern Ireland. The agency calls on people to make informed decisions about alcohol intake.

Festivities are scheduled throughout the region. Stephanie Hanlon, Regional Lead for Drugs and Alcohol at the agency, stated that individuals should establish a drinking plan and adhere to it, even under group pressure.

Excessive alcohol leads to short-term effects including nausea, hangovers, accidents, poor judgement, and disputes. Long-term use harms the heart, liver, brain, and stomach.

The agency lists measures to reduce risks. People should set a daily drink limit based on guidelines and eat a full meal beforehand.

Drinking water during events helps maintain hydration. Participants should drink at a moderate pace, stay active by mingling or dancing, and arrange transport ahead.

The buddy system requires watching friends. If someone overconsumes, provide non-alcoholic drinks, avoid leaving them alone, and travel home as a group.
