Parents and guardians across Northern Ireland are being urged to discuss the risks of alcohol and drugs with teenagers ahead of exam results days.

Stephanie Hanlon, regional lead for substance use at the Public Health Agency, said that initiating conversations early helps young people feel supported. She advised parents to be open and non-judgemental, and noted that family attitudes toward drinking strongly influence teenage behavior.

The PHA warned that heavy drinking can cause vomiting, organ damage, falls and accidents, as well as impaired judgment leading to regrettable decisions. Mixing alcohol with other drugs increases unpredictability and danger. Young people should be encouraged to drink water, avoid mixing substances, and seek urgent medical help if a friend becomes unwell after taking something.

Ms Hanlon highlighted that disappointing results can trigger stress, anxiety and low mood. She asked parents to watch for signs of distress and to maintain open communication about emotional wellbeing.
