Infrastructure Minister Launches Demand-Led Residents' Parking Scheme
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has launched a demand-led process for establishing residents' parking zones across Northern Ireland. The application window opens in April 2026 for an initial three-month period and will reopen cyclically.
The scheme targets areas with persistent commuter or nuisance parking on public roads where less than 50 percent of properties have off-street parking access. Guidance and criteria appear on NI Direct at www.nidirect.gov.uk/residents-parking.
Kimmins noted demand since the Residents' Parking Review Report published by predecessor John O’Dowd in late 2024. She stated officials will continue schemes already under way in the Bogside in Derry and Iveagh area of West Belfast.
West Belfast MP Paul Maskey welcomed the move. He said communities have faced parking problems for years and residents should park near their homes.
Cllr Claire Canavan supported the scheme for Clonard and Springfield Road areas. She said it will prioritise locals and cut congestion.
Residents can apply if their area meets the criteria when the process starts.
