Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced a new application process for demand-led residents' parking schemes. The process opens on 28 April 2026 and closes on 31 July 2026.

Kimmins stated that the approach follows recommendations from the Residents’ Parking Review Report. The report found that such zones function where local need exists but require changes for better delivery.

Individuals and communities can submit proposals for parking zones in their areas. The department will assess and prioritize schemes during the three-month window. Applications will reopen on a cyclical basis.

Areas qualify if they face ongoing commuter or nuisance parking on public roads. Less than 50 percent of properties must have off-street parking access. Proposals need evidence of local support.

Kimmins noted that parking concerns many residents. She urged those believing their area would benefit to review the criteria and guidance on NI Direct.
