Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced the opening of a new application process for demand-led residents' parking schemes. The process started on 28 April. Applications remain open until 31 July 2026.

The system lets individuals and communities submit proposals for parking zones. The window will reopen on a cyclical basis. This allows the Department for Infrastructure to assess and prioritise schemes.

Proposed areas must show persistent commuter or nuisance parking. They must consist of public roads only. Fewer than 50% of properties should have off-street parking access. Applications need evidence of local support.

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey welcomed the opening. He thanked Minister Kimmins for addressing concerns in affected areas, including west Belfast. Maskey noted commuter parking forces residents to park away from home during busy periods.

The approach follows a residents' parking review report. Kimmins stated last month she planned a streamlined process. She encouraged eligible areas to review criteria and apply.
