Armagh Council Backs National Gallery Art Reproductions Project
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council will install life-sized reproductions of famous artworks in Armagh as part of the National Gallery's Art on Your Doorstep programme. The council's economic development and regeneration committee approved the partnership and requested a further report on display locations.
The reproductions will appear first in Armagh City. They will then move to other sites across the borough. Displays in Armagh run from March to September 2027. After that, the artworks relocate within the borough through late winter 2027.
The National Gallery selected 12 UK partners, including Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and Derry and Strabane District Council. National Gallery representatives visited the borough in March 2025 and proposed Armagh as the starting point.
Brian Johnston, head of tourism, arts and culture, stated at the March committee meeting that the National Gallery covers the first £5,000 for reproductions. The council estimates its costs at around £5,000 for production and installation.
Alderman Ian Burns proposed the initiative. Councillor Ian Wilson seconded the recommendations. The committee approved.
Projections of selected artworks will appear on the Market Place Theatre facade during evening hours. The theatre, Community Arts Programme, FE McWilliam Gallery and Armagh County Museum plan related events.
An open call will invite residents, groups, schools and businesses across the borough to submit response artworks for a public exhibition. Community activities start later in 2026.
