Northern Ireland Residents Submit Nearly 85,000 Irish Passport Applications in 2025
Residents of Northern Ireland submitted 84,980 applications for Irish passports in 2025. The figures cover the six counties: Antrim with 27,971 applications, Down with 20,521, Londonderry with 14,377, Tyrone with 10,582, Armagh with 8,175, and Fermanagh with 3,354.
The Department of Foreign Affairs recorded 933,121 passport applications across all areas in 2025, a 12% drop from 1,061,629 in 2024. Applications from Irish citizens abroad rose almost 35%, from 200,609 to 270,077.
Dublin led with 165,430 applications, followed by Cork at 64,559. Other high numbers came from Kildare with 31,274, Galway with 31,138, and Meath with 26,395. Not all applicants specified a county.
Passports issued numbered 481,786 to men and 451,335 to women. Reports listed 32,230 lost passports, 2,712 stolen, and 5,222 replaced for damage. Authorities revoked 32 passports for fraud and refused 39 applications.
Only 302 applications used the Irish language, or 0.03% of the total, down slightly from 372 in 2024.
The Department of Foreign Affairs attributed the overall decline partly to the five-year anniversary of Covid-19 travel restrictions. Children's passports, valid for five years, saw fewer renewals due to pandemic disruptions in 2020.
