Pupils from St Malachy’s Primary School in Armagh took part in a litter pick at the Astropark of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium. Teachers and Planetarium staff supervised the children as they wore gloves and high-visibility jackets to collect litter from the outdoor area.

Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Alderman Stephen Moutray, attended the event. He praised the pupils' enthusiasm and noted the initiative's role in encouraging young people to take pride in their local environment.

Michael Burton, Director of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, highlighted the importance of keeping the Astropark tidy due to its ecology and visitor numbers.

Armagh Observatory and Planetarium has scheduled five litter-pick events this year as part of the Big Spring Clean campaign, organised by Live Here Love Here with council support. Pupils from St Patrick’s Primary School in Armagh also participated in one such event at the Planetarium.

The council provides litter pickers, gloves, bags and high-visibility vests to volunteers. Waste from events can go into household bins or be collected via council depots.

Council reminders during the campaign include £120 fixed penalty fines for littering and £400 fines for fly-tipping, plus potential legal action. Contact the council at 0300 0300 900 or via email to join or organise a clean-up.
