Armagh Councillors Press DAERA Minister for Badger Culling to Combat Bovine TB
Councillors in Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon approved a proposal to write to DAERA Minister Andrew Muir requesting immediate action on badger culling to address bovine TB. The decision came at the council's monthly meeting on February 23.
Councillor Tim McClelland, a Tandragee farmer representing the Lagan River DEA, led the call. He stated that bovine TB remains out of control in Northern Ireland after decades and millions in annual costs. McClelland argued that badger culling represents a necessary step and accused the minister of delaying through planned consultations and legislation.
Minister Muir's correspondence outlined a spring consultation on wildlife interventions, to be followed by decisions on measures alongside cattle and people-focused actions. He referenced the Bovine TB Eradication Transformation Programme, established per the TB Partnership Steering Group's blueprint published in April 2025. The group, formed in January 2025, includes farming, industry, veterinary, and environmental representatives.
Councillor Peter Lavery of the Alliance Party and Lurgan DEA countered that prior DUP ministers, including Edwin Poots, failed to act effectively. Lavery supported a recent cross-border trial and the minister's ongoing work, including increased testing, biosecurity advice, and preparation for wildlife options.
Councillor Keith Ratcliffe of the TUV and Cusher DEA backed the proposal, citing impacts on about 70 farmers in the Clare area where badgers transmit the disease to livestock. He noted compensation payments for culled animals add to costs.
McClelland rejected concerns over a pilot scheme in Donegal and northwest Northern Ireland, warning it could delay action for years. His motion, seconded by Ratcliffe, passed without opposition.
