Belfast City Council Schedules March Events to Address Violence Against Women and Girls
Belfast City Council has arranged multiple events in March to back the Northern Ireland Executive's Strategic Framework to End Violence Against Women and Girls. The programme features public sessions, sector workshops, and funding for local projects.
A family event called One Step Louder takes place at Girdwood Community Hub on 8 March for International Women's Day. It offers activities and stalls with details on local services for women and families. A panel discussion titled Her Safety, Our Responsibility occurs at Walkway Community Centre on 27 March.
Workshops target hairdressing and beauty trainees in south Belfast on 9, 10, and 12 March. Sports clubs can join a safeguarding session at Olympia Leisure Centre on 24 March. Arts sector events happen on 11 and 27 March, and a session for public space designers is set for 31 March.
An event at the MAC on 31 March involves Queen's University and community partners to examine engaging men and boys on behaviours linked to violence against women and girls. The council allocated £340,000 to 23 community projects via its Local Change Fund, raising the total supported initiatives to 50.
These projects cover theatre productions, teen workshops, training for LGBTQIA+ and minority ethnic communities, sports programmes, and school work with young children. Free training assists community groups in spotting domestic abuse and coercive control signs.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly, stated the council backs the Executive's efforts through community networks to create tailored solutions. She noted this marks the second year of such area and sector events plus community training. Over 90% of last year's attendees reported greater confidence in aiding others. Event details appear on the council website at belfastcity.gov.uk/endviolence.
